Takashima City in Shiga Prefecture is an area of such heavy rain and high humidity that showers are called “Takashima” showers. When threads are appropriately moist, the weave is stronger, and weaving was widespread there from the Edo period. Takashima canvas is characterized by its strength, the result of expertise built up throughout its long history. It is quite strong enough to support heavy objects placed within it.
